I was watching Sex and The City this week and a quote that really jumped out at me was, “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Well, it’s true isn’t it? And yet we get so offended by the idea of a copy cat. It’s very instinctually engrained in us too. I remember in 2nd grade when an art project ended in tears after one girl drew the same kind of flowers as another. And more recently at senior prom where the girls created a facebook page solely for the purpose of making sure that nobody wore the same thing. Why is it such a crime? Everyday we observe the world around us and as we do we subconsciously change ourselves into more and more of an amalgamation of the tings around us that we find inspiring. How does this mentality feed into our values regarding paraphrasing and plagiarism?
